Parents push back against SPS consolidation plans, fearing student impact

The state's largest school district has released two cost-saving proposals that could shutter or consolidate dozens of elementary schools.

Seattle schools are looking to save tens of millions of dollars with a new plan for the 2025-2026 school year but families are already pushing back a day after the announcement of a new website that details the possible closures and new district boundaries.

For many families, Seattle's McGilvra Elementary is a community of strong relationships and student learning during what's been a challenging transition out of the pandemic.

Parents are furious over the district's two consolidation models that could close as many as 21 schools, including McGilvra, amid a budget crisis: a deficit of $90 million year over year. The goal is to save as much as $31.5 million in operating costs.
