Despite the late-week selloff, stocks in the major indexes closed flat for the week after a strong start. The S&P 500 remains 2.7% below its peak while the tech-heavy Nasdaq is down 4.7% from its high. Against a heroic rebound on Friday, there is still enough fear over valuations and a weakening consumer that stocks should be expected to continue lower as investors take profits into the end of the year.
In other assets, the price of gold rose almost 2% to $4084 per ounce as investors sought safety from the stock market volatility. Gold is having a record year, up 47% on a return of inflation and dollar debasement. Cryptocurrencies got crushed last week with bitcoin down 8% to $94k as leverage-forced selling mixed with the risk-off environment.
