Quarterly 13F reports are out and are always a source for ideas on which stocks to buy. 13F filings show the long stock positions as well as put and call options and are required to be filed by anyone managing more than $100 million in securities. The rule was set up in 1975 to bring transparency into what institutional investors, hedge funds and other big money players were buying…a way to give the public more information on what stocks were being targeted by investment managers.
Managers are required to file their 13F with the SEC within 45 days of the end to the calendar quarter so you always see these pop up around mid-February, May, August and November.
Because it’s assumed anyone with $100 million in investments is probably rockin’ a team of analysts pouring over financial statements and spreadsheets, a lot of investors look to these 13F filings as what the ‘smart money’ is buying. Of course, as we’ll see in the stocks these billionaires bought last quarter…they aren’t always so smart but I’ll concede they have more resources to analyze a stock than most of us Main Street investors.
